(@ schmidt hammer lassen Architects) Whirlpool Performance house 12,000m2 Concept The regeneration of an historic industrial harbour by creating cultural hubs along the Huangpu River bank. The buidings would act as a filter linking the city with the water. Large performance halls are arranged so as they swirl around a central fulcrum that becomes the heart of the building leading all occupants and passers by alike through the activities and out to the water. The overlapping of Different sized theatre spaces creates an undulating perimeter defining the interior spaces and opening up to and drawing in the surrounding landscape My role (2011) The team consisted of 4 people. I was solely responsible for the design development of the performance house (Building #1) including concept development, internal planning, facade design, landscaping and final presentation. My role in the final presentation included: Plan and section drawings for all 4 buildings, 2D & 3D Diagrams, Text, 3D visualisations were part in-house and part made in China Working in China Working in the chinese market has been an exciting experience as well as challenging. It has required re-evaluating the client-architect relationship, a thorough understanding of contract conditions and consequences and recognising the opportunites that exist amongst the cultural differences. It has also been a lesson in internationalisation. the importance of strategy in a global approach,

The DGI sports & leisure complex is designed to complement the wider aspirations of the master plan. The building’s disparate functions offer a flexible, multifunctional context that will reflect the multifaceted spectrum of activities that it serves, including a water culture centre, a flexible multi-purpose hall, cafes and services. The proposal’s strikingly sculpturalroof profile intentionally refersnto the heritage and the scale of Holbæk’s old harbour – the site of the shipyard, fishing boats and tar. My role As group leader of the competitions department at the time I was responsible for overseeing the project’s development and progess, budget and resources. I was soley responsible for managing the delivery and production of the presentation material. It was my role to coordinate and assess the 3D visualisations, design the layout and produce and compile all the information for final delivery. as well as producing diagrams and text.
Thesis 2002, School of Architecture, UCD My Thesis is a Cultural Arts Centre for inner city Dublin that allows user and passer-by alike to engage with activities within the building. The concept focuses on the process of creating art and participating in production rather than the exhibition of a finished product. This becomes a means of gaining more exposure and interaction with the arts within the building’s own community and the city as a whole. Engagement with the building can be indirectly from a curious daily passer-by on a tram who monitors the gradual progress of a sculpture or directly from a user as they move through the building and its multitude of activities. The idea of a journey through the building informed the site investigation also. A route through the vacant land was guided by the existing spatial grain of the context without being restrained by it. Navigation of the site became more radical, seeping in and out of the site’s existing fabric. Visual links reinforced these physical connections and created spatial possibilities. The result was a volumetric narrative of the site and its activities. Tutors: Shifhu Peng & Roisin Heneghen. Dalian Residential Masterplan, China
(@ schmidt hammer lassen Architects) Housing competition 3 different masterplans were requested for this site on the outskirts of the emerging city of Dalian in China. 480,000m2 built area & 350,00m2 Site area Residential The masterplan consisted of different housing typologies in an extremely dense and low scale housing development on a sloping site leading to the sea. The client was very keen that the whole development should have a direct relationship to the sea. regardless of their placement on the site. Detached villas, terraced villas, highrise housing and business units were all to be incorporated into a cohesive masterplan that was cut across the middle by three roads. Each masterplan should have a distinct theme and concept behind it, with attractive landscaping and communal areas. My role I was the architect responsible for the project. It was my role to drive the designs for the 3 masterplans forward, to create and manage the budget and program throughout the process, to ensure we met our project milestones and delivered the project for presentation in China |
(@ Foster + Partners) Budget: £150m Shell and Core, Contract Type: Construction Management Background 51 Lime Street is a 28 storey office development in the City of London scheduled for shell and core completion in December 2006. The design of the building’s form is based upon 3 overlapping cresent shapes in plan which rise up to different heights. The East and West facade are glazed while the North and South facades incorporate solid and transparent panels in response to their specific climatic conditions. My role (2004-2006) I was involved with the project from the early investigative cladding studies. Following this I was involved in the development of the steelwork package and its coordination with the cladding system. I was also package architect for the building’s staircases and general metalwork. During this time in particular I gained considerable site experience as well as exposure to the construction management procurement route and the client’s negotiated trade contractor process.
(@ schmidt hammer lassen Architects) Housing, Retail, Hotel & Office Development Competition 187,000m2 A Unique iconic mixed-use masterplan delevopment representing modern China, grounded in its relationship with the surrounding established neighbourhoods. Approach The massing of the project is determined the physical and environmental context. The funtional layout is clearly divided beteween the residential and retail to the south and the hotel and bussiness center to the north. The 42 storey 5 star highrise hotel/office is placed to minimise overshadowing. The retail area is placed in a continuous plinth around the lower levels to create a defined streetscape. The residential layout evolves to become a direct volumetric response to the environmental context, optimizing daylighting conditions for all apartments. Cuts are made into the north/south-facing slabs to meet the daylighting requirements that effect the spacing between buildings. This rational environmental-led approach becomes the architectural expression for masterplan. Sustainability Working closely with environmental engineers, Werner Sobek, a dual strategy to achieve Leed Gold accreditation and reduce CO2 emissions due to renewable energy, was created for the project. resulting in a 30% reduction in energy consumption. My role I worked on the project exclusively with 2 others over a 9 week period. I was directly involved in the concept generation and masterplan development throughout. Ultimately I was responsible for the planning of the south plot retail and residential functions and the site plan. I was repsonsible for the area schedule and I coordinated with our energy consultant with regard to sustainability
(@ schmidt hammer lassen Architects) Retail masterplan 80,000m2 A large retail development in an area of natural and historic beauty. Site The site for the development is located in the outskirts of the historic town of Hillerød. The town is surrounded by large green areas. Rather than crop off the natural meadows that run across the site boundary, the development allows the landscape to maintain its course and flow through the scheme which becomes built up around it. Wide plazas and market squares re-enforce the existence of this nature route through the retail space continuing naturally into the surrounding landscape at either end. My role Working closely with the client, their advisors and Hillerød Kommune, I was the architect responsible for preparing the project for the municpal planning process and environmental impact assesment. I worked largely alone on this project generating material required for planning, public hearings, market and spatial analysis and substantial client sales material. Download Møllerbro PDF |
(@ schmidt hammer lassen Architects) Luxury masterplan of condominiums and vilals Masterplan concept The project consisted of the creation of a resort community with a 6 star condominium hotel and a large number of private villas. The contour lines of the existing terrain inspired the masterplan’s distinctive and beautiful layout. Buildings and landscape were intended to be in diaglogue with one another, empahsising the harmony and tranquility of such a development in an area of particular natural beauty. The site falls steeply from east to west and ends directly on a sandy beach. The trerrain was further articulated along the eastern side towards the main road by forming a ridge across the width of the site. The condominiums were embeded in this ridge to balance the visual impact on the landscape. The volumes are stepping down and offset from each other to maximise views to the sea. At the foot of the condominiums lay the pool landscape that defined the edge of the private villa area. The villas flow across the site like strings of pearls, also embedded sensitively, undulating gently down to the water.
(@ schmidt hammer lassen Architects) Residential competition Øresundsparken is a large residential housing development separated from the coast line by parkland and marina complex. Concept The concept for the masterplanwas to emphasise the development’s proximity to the Øresund coast line by drawing the water in directly to the site along a single canal route. The canal leads to and from a proposed new large marina in the heart of housing development. Housing atolls The marina is surrounded on all sides by atolls or housing enclosures that slope down to the marina. The atolls are cranked sloping housing blocks which fold in at each end to enclose an intimate communal inner courtyard. Canal houses form another housing typology and flank the canal that leads back through the site and out to sea. My role I was the architect responsible for the project. This involved managing the concept and design progress, working closely with the client, and inhouse senior partners to develop the conept. We worked closely with environmental and services engineers to assess and refine the logistics of the concept and sustainable features of the project. Download pdf
